Overview
Legal drafting often starts with a question: What does the law actually say? Until now, that step happened in Paxton’s dedicated Research view. With this update, you can perform real legal research without leaving the AI Assistant.
Ask a question or request a draft, and Paxton automatically finds relevant authorities—statutes, regulations, or case law—and integrates them into your response. Every citation is clickable, letting you inspect the underlying source before you rely on it.
This release connects two of Paxton’s most powerful capabilities: research and drafting. It’s faster, more intuitive, and built for the way lawyers actually work.
How It Works
You can enable research directly inside any AI Assistant chat.
- Open the AI Assistant in Paxton.
- Click Sources then toggle Enable Research.
- Choose your preferred legal sources such as case law, statutes, or regulations.
- Enter your question or drafting request.
Paxton will automatically conduct real research, integrate verified citations into the answer or draft, and display sources you can click to review.
Example Use Cases
Ask Questions with Real Citations
Example prompt:
“What precedent supports emotional distress damages in California?”
Paxton runs legal research first, then provides a clear summary of the law with citations to relevant cases and statutes.
Draft Legal Documents Backed by Authority
Example prompt:
“Draft a motion to dismiss for lack of personal jurisdiction.”
Paxton retrieves relevant precedent, drafts the response using those authorities, and includes live citations within the chat. You can continue refining in Canvas or export the draft for review.
Get Guidance When Research Can Help
If your request would benefit from supporting authority, Paxton will suggest turning on research. This keeps your work grounded in verified sources without extra steps.
